Search Engine

A search engine is a tool located inside the browser, it is used to find or search information available on the world wide web. Search engines are designed for web searches. It provides a systematic way of getting any information by using simple text due to the textual search query. Common examples of search engines are Google, yahoo, bing, and MSN.

How do Search Engines Work?

Search engines mainly work on some processes which include:-

  • Crawling
  • Indexing
  • Retrieving

Crawling – The search engine’s processes first start with the crawler, the crawler reads all the information present in the web pages. The search is done by the web crawler, it searches all the web pages available on the world wide web. Google bot is designed by Google, it is also a crawler. Basically, the work of a crawler or spider is to visit the web page, read it, follow the links of other web pages this process is called crawling. Every time the crawler visits the web page it makes a copy of that page to add its URLs to the index. And it adds the URLs because it visits the website again in months for the changes and updates.

Indexing –  After the process of crawling the indexing of the web pages happens. After all, the web pages are fetched the indexing occurs and the fetched web pages are saved in the database from where they can be retrieved in the future. In this process of indexing, its work is to identify the words and the sentences that describe the web page. Your website should be first indexed then only it will be displayed on the search engine.

Retrieval – Retrieval is the last process in which we find the best-matched results on the search engine. Search Engines use different types of algorithms that help in giving the correct and the relevant result. The most relevant and viewed answers are shown on the top like PageRank is a known algorithm that is used by the search engines.
